Woeng Nakhon Khasem - Juicy crab with peppery fried rice/noodles at a humble street stall

What to Order: Crab fried rice, Crab Noodles

Rates: 100 THB per person

Finding this place and eating at this place was an adventure in itself. You have to rely heavily on trust, and confidence. Trust on Google Maps to the T. Because there are no signs or boards, you just have to end up at the exact spot and look for the red stools and look for an old man pottering over a Wok. And you need to have self confidence because no one here speaks English, and there are no menus.

But is all this adventure worth it? Yes absolutely.

Firstly, as Indians, we are very familiar with fried rice and noodles, so you go there expecting something, but what you get is 10 times better.

When you're confident that you've found the right place, just go sit on a stool, and if you're lucky, a table. The server will be a little scared of you at first but give him a warm smile. He will eventually come to ask you what you're doing here. Meats wise they serve only crab, so thats easy. Dont bother chatting up, just say what you want clearly (noodles or rice or both), and he'll understand. Don't bother with google translate or he will get intimidated. This is purely a locals place so they are more scared of you than you are of them.

A very humble looking plate of fried rice or noodles will come to you, but with a big bowl of chilli vinegar. Squeeze a lime on the rice, use the yummy chilli stuff half a spoon at a time, mix and dig in. They dont rely on any of the heavy sauces like Indian chinese, the rice is spiced by only pepper and soy sauce and it makes all the difference. The crab is juicy and gives the rice a seafood flavor which just doesnt happen with chicken. Its light and non greasy. The noodles come wth cabbage and shiitake mushrooms along with the crab, again, light and easy on the stomach. Pepper and crab will be the last thing on your palette, and who doesnt like that?

Helpful tip - They dont serve drinks. You can pick up something to drink from the 7/11 on the opposite side of the road before you take a seat, soft drinks or beer. They wouldnt care less.
