On Lok Yun - Traditional, small Thai breakfast place, slowly gaining popularity among tourists. Kaya toast a must try.
What to Order: Kaya toast, French toast, full breakfast with toppings
Rates: 150THB per person
This place is slowly climbing the tourist popularity ladder, and could also possibly have waiting in the morning. So I would recommend reaching here before 9am to get a table right away.
As soon as you sit on the table, you will be served with a lukewarm green tea which is on the house. The place is a typical Thai joint, with run down walls and over used, fading table tops. You know this place has been around for a while.
I started with the signature French toast, well, because it was signature. To my surprise, it was savory, deep fried egg and bread. It came with a small plate of 3 sauces mixed together to dip into and eat. Pretty sure one of them was fish sauce. It was very different than what I was expecting, but as a fried egg dish, it was okay. A bit too oily for my taste. I also ordered just the toppings on the side - bacon, ham and sausages. They were as expected.
Then came the Kaya toast. Kaya is a pink, freshly made, fragrant coconut jam / custard. The thick, pillowy, salty butter toasted bread with a generous layer of Kaya on top was a great combination of sweet and savory. Kaya toast is also popular as a Singaporean breakfast item, but the Kaya here was a bit different and really really delicious. The Kaya was so refreshing and light, mildly sweet, it was incredibly moreish. I will be going back for more.
The restaurant also offered a lot of more great looking options - ham and egg sandwich, milo / chocolate toast, different types of eggs - which I will definitely try in my next visit.
I went as far as to buy myself a jar of house made Kaya - which only lasts for 3 days. Mine didn't need to last as I finished it in 1 day.
